Why the big depression?I doubt if there has been a single war on this planet that went according to the original strategy without moves and counter-moves due to re-assessments of the situation but civilians are not trained in warfare and can fall prey to the tactical decisions of the generals if they have unrealistic expectations.They also fall prey to Hollywood theatrics.
