It's important to understand that the Savior's execution was not a Jewish one. It was a Roman execution. That being said, it's important to understand that in order for a sentence to be carried out by the Roman Government, three things have to happen:

1. An accusation (the charges brought against the defendant)

Jesus could not be executed by the Romans for reasons of "we really don't like him" Or "He's preaching false doctrine and hurting our business!" Or "We're losing members!"

No. There had to be a clear accusation. Not just any accusation, but an accusation that Jesus violated a Roman law, which would lead to a Roman trial then a Roman verdict.

So, what was the accusation? What Roman law did Jesus violate? Now remember, this accusation had to be a Roman violation. Not a Jewish one. So, what was he accused of?

The common and general answer is that the Savior claimed to be a king and therefore claiming to be a king was an act of sedition and in violation of Roman law. But there is a problem with that accusation. The Savior never did make that claim, nor did he ever at any time speak against the Roman government. In fact, whenever there was an accusation made by Jesus it was directed toward the leaders of the Jews, not about the Roman government. In other words the Romans were growing to love Jesus. The Savior was an advocate of peace. He was a friend to the Romans. If it weren't for the Jewish leaders, the Romans would not be concerned with him.

In the meanwhile it was Pilot's job to ensure a peaceful relationship between the Roman and Jewish governments. So when the leaders of the Jews were vexing the ear of Pilot, his concern was about one thing and one thing only - to keep his job. So, his ability to keep peace between the two governments was critical.

The Jews wanted the Roman government to execute Jesus but once again there was a major problem. In order for the Roman government to execute Jesus, the Jews had to show Pilot strong evidence that Jesus was in violation of Roman law, without this evidence, they would fail.

But eventually the leaders of the Jews finally found one. Tax evasion.

When brought before Pontius Pilate, the Jewish leaders accused Jesus of treason, saying, "We have found this man subverting our nation, forbidding payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king" (Luke 23:2)

But Pilot and King Herod saw no threat in Jesus and found no evidence that Jesus was preaching against Rome or any evidence that he wanted to make himself a king. So, this talk about Jesus being a king was a Jewish concern. To support this fact, it was the Romans who eventually wrote the subscription above the cross that read "…the King of the Jews", not "…one who attempted to be emperor of Rome." In other words, the Romans knew that the accusation that Jesus claimed to be a "king" in Rome was bogus.

But this accusation of "forbidding payment of taxes to Caesar" was something Pilot could not ignore, or at best, pawn Jesus off to someone else, someone like King Herod Antipas, who found nothing wrong with Jesus and sent him back to Pilate.

But the Jews were relentless and Pilot knew that if he ignored this anti-tax accusation against Jesus, the Jews could appeal this case to a higher power (Tiberius, who was over Pilate and Herod) and have Pilot removed for ignoring this critical element that was obviously twisted by the Jews to potentially cause Tiberius to think that Jesus was preaching to His ever growing crowds that they didn't have to pay taxes to Caesar, and if Tiberius were to discover that Pilot intended to release Jesus, Pilot could get into big trouble.

Because of this Pilot was compelled to convict Jesus of "forbidding payment of taxes" to Caesar, because there was no other accusation. The accusation that Jesus wanted to be king was quashed by Jesus himself when he told Pilate that his kingdom was not of this world.

Now, you're going to find this next bit interesting: Notice the word "tribute" that Caesar used. Why the word "tribute"? Now, the definition of tribute is another word for voluntary, to give, to donate. In other words, paying taxes to Caesar was a "voluntary gift of respect".

Well, it just so happens that our current IRS tax system uses the word "voluntary" as well. On the 1040 instructions it refers to it as "voluntary" tax. In fact, the IRS 1040 is referred to as "voluntary compliance" form.

Caesar's "tribute" and the IRS's "voluntary tax" are both acts of involuntary servitude. The founding fathers understood that this type of tax was a form of slavery and made sure it was clearly addressed in the U.S. Constitution (Amendment 13 "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude".)

This brings up the question. If the government needed your money, then why not use "eminent domain", take it from you and then give you just compensation for it?

Well, one could argue and say "They do give you just compensation for your money. They give you roads, schools and provide you a service for it." But there is a problem with that argument. The government cannot use eminent domain on a donation. They can't use it on something that you volunteered to give because the IRS tax is a "voluntary" tax and the 1040 is a "voluntary compliance" form. The government cannot use "eminent domain" on something that is "voluntary" even if you're forced to volunteer.

But wait! Why can't the government just outright take a portion of your money by using 'eminent domain' and give you 'just compensation for it? Well, they can't. Why? Because if they were to take your money by using eminent domain then they would have to give you fair market value for it, and they can't tell you that the fair market value for your money is the blessing you will receive from the school they are going to build, unless of course they plan on giving you fair market ownership of the school. Thus, we are stuck with "volunteering" our taxes to the government, and if we don't volunteer our taxes, then we'll get into big trouble.

So, the Romans used the word "tribute" and the IRS is using the word "voluntary". This point is critical, because if the Savior were to say that paying "tribute" to Caesar was an act of involuntary servitude, then paying "tribute" to the IRS would also be involuntary servitude.

Now, when Pilate was questioning Jesus, there were two accusations he needed to address.

#1 Jesus claiming to be king

#2 Jesus promoting an anti-give-tribute-to-Caesar ideology.

It's interesting to note that the dialogue regarding the questioning of the first accusation was the only one recorded (Luke 23:3):

Jesus: "Thou sayest" and then explains that yes, he is a king, but

But Pilate's line of questions with Jesus regarding the second and very serious accusation that he was promoting an anti-tribute-to-Caesar campaign was not recorded. Nowhere in the bible is it mentioned. (Or maybe it was recorded but later redacted? Hmm).

Here's the thing. Jesus never lied. He answered the first accusation and cleared it up, but what about the 2nd accusation? Did Pilate for some odd reason forget to address it? Or did Pilate mention it but Jesus was quiet about it? And, if Jesus answered and cleared up the first accusation, but remained quiet on the second, then what was Pilate supposed to assume? That Jesus was innocent of the second charge?

But here's the thing. Jesus was never guilty of tax evasion and neither was Ken. Ken Cromar has never preached or taught that one should NOT pay "tribute" to the U.S. government. His passion and fight were that the IRS MUST OBEY THE LAW (especially their own made-up ones, which they don't do.)

And so you can see that Barbara & Ken in their ongoing battle against Goliath IRS is no small thing, and that the one encouraging thought that could provide comfort is the knowledge that they are not alone, for the powers of darkness could not come up with any other charge against the Savior, but that he was a tax evader.

Raland Brunson will forever be a hero to me because when I was first arrested by the traumatic 13-man FBI SWAT in Wyoming and transported to Ogden, Utah, he was one of the first to find me and actually came to the jail to try to see me. When he learned that they didn't allow visitors except by video conference, he did that. One of the first questions he asked me was something like, "Ken, how serious are you about this fight you're in?" I think I surprised him when I said, "Raland, I'm 'ALL IN' on this, and intend to fight it to the end, even if it costs me my life." He replied, "That's all I need to know."

From that day on, despite Raland's busy schedule he began to devote much of every day to help me with court filings, writing, researching, orchestrating people, etc., and he hasn't stopped. And to think we didn't really know each other that well when he first tried to do the Christian thing of comfort "those in prison". I think if I ever get a chance Barbara & I will have to build a statue to honor Raland. Or maybe I'll ask Barbara to make a super long bright red cape for my dear valuable friend "Super Raland"! Isn't it great to have friends and people who love and support you? We feel super blessed.
