Solitary Confinement  单独监禁

  The 10-days of solitary confinement was not fun.  Completely lost my sense of time, because of little stimulation and no view of a clock.  I had to be handcuffed and escorted the few times I was allowed out of the cell for showers (three times a week), or "outside recreation" - 5 times a week inside a 9' x 18' chain-link cage (think dog kennel).  I couldn't believe how happy it made me when I was finally allowed to get a Bible and a couple of other small paperbacks.  After 10 days I was glad to be moved to a giant, noisy, open warehouse pod filled with bunk-beds (4 rows by 12 rows) and my 95 new "roommates".  I went from extreme loneliness to people overload.  Such is prison life.  And even when you're surrounded by people it can feel pretty lonely.

  Jails/Prisons are a horrible hell I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.  It's particularly bad when you know you are 100% innocent.  Barbara and I are on a long, strange journey heading towards the Supreme Court where we anticipate being exonerated and vindicated.  However, there is no way our lives will ever get back the time that is forever lost.  No amount of money could ever compensate for lost time of association with loved family and friends. Trust me, you don't want to live the kind of life with UNrepented sins that could earn qualifying to be landed in hell forever.  Don't do it!  An eternity of guaranteed suffering and regret is not a wise choice.

  Have you ever tried to imagine yourself being in prison? I am grateful to be in prison for many reasons. I've been able to learn just how judgmental I've been throughout my life.  I've been so wrong.  I feel horrible.  For example, I've never liked tattoos, especially if they are on the face. Repulsive.  I immediately, instantly misjudged, and held negative opinions without even knowing anything about the person. When I first got to Pahrump, there was this one young, virtually toothless (drugs - meth), skinny 20-something with lots of really bad, armature "art" all over himself, including his face.  One day on our way to lunch he cheerfully said, "Hey Paul.  How's it going today?" I replied, "Fine.  How did you know my name?"  "Oh, I've just heard your name being said by others," he replied.  "Thanks for saying hello. You're kind.  What's your name?"  "Gopher" he said.  Gopher and I have become unlikely friends, and he now comes to our nightly prayers once in a while.  We laugh about how "out on the streets" (non-prison) we probably would never have even said hello to each other.  This experience also taught me how important a person's name is to them.  Since then, I've made it a point to try to ask and learn everyone's name and say hello.  It's exactly what I imagine Jesus would do, right?  This one strategy alone has helped me break down walls with others -- and within myself too -- and earned the respect of many.

  When I got into the 95-man warehouse bunk pod, fortunately, there was already a small prayer group that gather each night at 9:15 pm for a few verses of scripture being followed by a group prayer averaging about 4-5 people per night.  With my recruiting help we more than doubled our numbers. Occasionally we've had as many as 18 attending each night.  We got so much interest in learning about the gospel that we even added a Bible Study for 30-minutes just prior to the nightly prayer.  We discussed things like faith, repentance, baptism, the Holy Ghost, forgiving those who have wronged us, death, and what comes after this life. Matthew 18:20 says, "For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them."  We often felt the Spirit of God with us and commented on the peace we feel.  Some caught fire! Beautiful!!

  Our little Bible Study group covered many topics and witnessed many little mini miracles in changes of hearts and minds.  The most remarkable of them we covered would probably have to be the subject of "Total Forgiveness".  This included the forgiving of others who harmed you, and being forgiven for harm we caused others, but also learning how to forgive oneself.  Joseph in Egypt showed a remarkable ability to forgive his brothers who had sold him into slavery.  (Genesis 45:9-11)  Joseph had suffered 12+ grueling years in a dungeon, far, far away from home in a foreign prison, among people whose language and culture he could not understand, and all for a crime he did not commit.  I can certainly relate to that a little bit.
