  • Zimbabwe has reverted to the gold standard: While most countries abandoned the gold standard in the last century, some African nations are reconsidering its necessity to stabilize their economies. The need to switch to the gold standard has been a long-discussed issue in the country, with the Zimbabwean dollar experiencing a more than 500% depreciation, and the currency rate plummeting by over threefold in just the last three months. The Zimbabwean dollar is a relatively new currency, established five years ago following the rise to power of the new president Mnangagwa. One of his first decisions was a complete overhaul of the national economy and financial system. This approach wasn't new for Zimbabwe: in the last decade, the country introduced and then removed from circulation ten independent currencies, each plummeting steeply and rapidly losing value. Introducing the gold Zimbabwean dollar aims to stabilize the exchange rate and help the country combat endless inflation. Unfortunately for Zimbabwe, the gold standard might only last for a short period. The country's gold reserve currently stands at just one ton of gold, barely enough to cover one month of imports at current volumes. President Mnangagwa is trying to address this issue by seeking additional international aid and opening the country to foreign investors. Success, however, remains elusive. Most international investors view Zimbabwe with caution, a country perpetually suffering from military coups and civil wars. Companies willing to consider investments are usually affiliated with military corporations and special services, posing a significant threat to the current president's regime. The viability of Zimbabwe's "gold" experiment will be tested over the next six months, as the country faces challenging negotiations with international creditors.

  Today is April 10, 2024, day 225 of my nightmare.  Yes, I was kidnapped by the IRS/FBI August 30th, 2023, at approximately 4:30 p.m. in a small Wyoming town along the Idaho border.  It has been a long 225 days and I really want to be free, but there are many things that I've learned while being in jail.  Thankfully, I'm not the same person I was when I walked in.

   A dear friend suggested in the early days, that though I'm 100% innocent of the political IRS charges, my friend thought it wise to take advantage of the situation by having me consider what it is I could repent of – I was a bit surprised by the idea at first but took him seriously.  The biggest surprise of the things I needed to change had to do with being judgmental.  I did not realize just how judgmental I was until the first day I walked into the common area where I had 47 new roommates divided into four pods of twelve.  Everyone looked the same.  I think back now on that day and realize how wrong I was.  Just because everyone had tattoos, it seemed, didn't make them all the same.  The jail was SO loud, too.  I had a hard time concentrating.  Walking into that situation was horrible.  Then, a guy with tattoos all over his body, even some on his face, walked up to me and said, "Hi, my name is John." And that meant all the world to me, that someone would just say hello!  The second and most important thing God wanted me to repent of was my scripture reading.  Though I thought I knew the scriptures well, I was gently chastised in a tender way saying, "You could have known me better by reading your scriptures more."  The very next morning I started at Genesis chapter 1 verse 1 and I'm almost finished reading the entire Bible.  My knowledge of God has deepened greatly.

  I've also learned that every one of these people has their own story and that they are a valued son of God.  Most people think that when someone is in jail, "they probably deserve to be there."  But that's being judgmental, isn't it?  I've also learned that there are many people not in jail that really should be and vice versa, there are some in jail that shouldn't be, including myself.  I wish that all judges, magistrates, and especially prosecutors were required to, before taking their office, to be booked into a random jail, to be strip-searched, to have all their clothes taken, to be locked down for three days in maximum security with only one hour out each day, and then to be put into the general jail population where they are amongst drug addicts, drug dealers, thieves, liars, rapists, pedophiles, and murderers and share the same toilets with 11 other people with no privacy.  To eat the horrible food that they claim has meat, when in reality the main substance comes in packaging that kitchen workers have said reads, "mechanically separated chicken substance."  Remember, that would be after all the meat is pulled off the bones.  I'm guessing they take what comes between the bones, the sinew, the other parts, that I don't even want to guess what they are, they grind it up and turn it into a big cube of pinkish-purplish something that they chop up and put into the food.  It's horrible.  I lost 30 pounds, though just recently thanks to my wife's encouragement to "just eat it", I've actually gained back three pounds, so I'm now only 27 down.  I really think those judges, magistrates, and prosecutors need to know what it's like to be in jail before they mete out "justice" to everybody else.  I think they need to be here for at least 2-4 weeks before they ever do this to someone else.

  On another note, the jails are so noisy that making phone calls is really challenging; first, you have to pay for them. Second, most of the calls don't even go through.  This one to my friend, Wendy, who is transcribing this, took at least 9 phone calls before it would go through.  I wonder if it is all by design that the phone systems are not more reliable?  It's enough to make you crazy sometimes, and I think that is the intent – is to frustrate.

  One of my cellmates, when he first walked into my cell, the first words out his mouth were, "Are you a pedophile?  You better tell me now, because if I find out later, I will beat you senseless."  He was covered with tattoos and was quite large and made it clear that he was a white supremacist.  My response was, "Hi, my name's Paul, Paul Cromar."  Another cellmate came in who had a terrible odor to him.  He had just come off of drug abuse and was in a bad way.  That was tough.  But, in all cases we managed to find a good place and were able to be good cellmates.

  The greatest joy inside has been finding people who actually care about changing their lives and finding God.  I started what I ended up calling "Scrap Paper Ministry".  Sometimes people needed specific scriptures to lift them.  I would write scriptures on a scrap piece of paper and have someone slide it under their door.  This became popular.  We must have helped get over a half a dozen Bibles and almost as many Books of Mormon out to people who wanted them.  In time, we started sitting down at tables together and sharing scriptures for about 15 minutes a day.  The number joining grew from 2 to 4 to 7 to sometimes 10 or more.  One night, at the end of our meeting, we were about to have a closing prayer, when we learned that Cameron's fiancé's niece had a terrible accident.  This mother of 5 was on life-support and he asked us to pray for her.  I asked if he wanted to join us and he did.  One person got on his knees and then another - I suggested we all get on our knees and I offered the pray for her well-being, explaining that though we wanted her to be healed, we "trust You, God, to do what is perfect for her" and that "we trust You, Heavenly Father, to help her in the perfect way that is in Your power, for her best benefit" and we closed that prayer.  But, during the prayer, something remarkable happened – the entire jail went dead quiet!  You have to know that jails are NOISY and for it to go quiet like that the Spirit was so beautiful and so strong – people were respecting what we were doing!  The next day Cameron had a note slid under the door for me, thanking me and the group praying for the niece, but he was sad to report that they took her off life-support and she passed away that next morning at 8 a.m., but that he was very grateful for that experience.

  Cameron has become a friend.  Cameron has a remarkable past.  When he was a "dumb, stupid, gangbanging 18-year-old", he murdered two rival gang members who attacked them, and he was sentenced to 26 years.  He wants his story to be shared.  When he was 18 years in, he learned that his last beloved relative, his sister, had died and he lost it.  They had to take all of his clothes away and put him in a special cell, I think 6 X 9 with no clothes, no blanket, no nothing, for three days.  It was at that point that he decided to call out for God's help.  God, as he puts it, was waiting for him to be ready and had kept him safe and was ready to teach him and build him back up now that he was literally stripped down to nothing.  He said God was very tender and kind to him.  He began reading and studying scripture for the first time in his life and to date he says, "I've read the Bible from beginning to end skipping no parts at all, reading all of the Old Testament, too, at least ten times."  It's changed him.  He's a repentant soul.  He loves God.  He is remorseful for what he has done.   As part of his restitution requirement, he had to write letters to his victims' families from their point of view, as though he were them.  He said that was the toughest thing he had ever done, but it was really powerful.

  On one of our many walks together, I asked Cameron who his favorite Bible character is, and he immediately said, "David" as in David and Goliath, as in David and Bathsheba.  He could relate to David who had started out promising but had actually cost an innocent, faithful, military friend their life.  I told him about my experience of going to Florence, Italy with my wife, Barbara, many years ago and how we waited three hours in line to go in to see the "David" statue.  When we walked in, there were three or four works in progress on each side of the hallway where Michelangelo was chiseling stone statues for a pope crypt when he, himself, died.  Each of the stones just has a face and an arm, maybe a piece of a leg, that has been worked on and it looked like they were trying to break out of the stone to be who they are meant to be – very interesting to see those works in progress.  But when arriving at the rotunda where the "David" is, I was shocked how big he was.  I imagined the statue was maybe 7-8 feet, at most.  I'm told it's 18 feet and it's on a large pedestal, too.  I could not believe how perfect that statue was in every little detail, and it brought tears to my eyes, how beautiful and how perfect it was.  Barbara had read a book called, "The Agony and the Ecstasy" about Michelangelo's life.  He had been asked, "How in the world did you know how to find a David in that large piece of stone?"   His answer was, "It's really very simple.  All you have to do is chip away the parts that do not belong."  I was stunned by that.  Thinking, chipping away the parts that don't belong.  Cameron loved that story and we talked about how each of us are works in progress.  How God is working on us one at a time.  God is working on us and trying to make something of us.  We agreed that the problem is most of us don't like God chipping on us and we decided that the hell that jail is it's a great place where you have to let God chip away on your bad parts and we should let Him work on us and not fight what He knows is best for us, because you can't escape His working on you.  Interestingly, just this morning, Cameron was released from this jail as part of a two-month process that will result in him going home to his fiancé.  I am so happy for Cameron.

  It has been remarkable to see the changes in people who come to our Sunday morning jail church and join us in our every-other-night scripture study.  It has been remarkable to see how God's finger has touched us in our meetings because one scripture seems to naturally flow into another scripture and then another as each person takes a turn sharing something.  It was too beautiful to be coincidental.  This has happened many times, including discussions about baptism.  Most have not been baptized and have taken Christ's example of him being baptized by John the Baptist as a sign that it's important for them to get baptized, too.   Wanting to follow Christ's example, at least five have committed to be baptized when they get out of jail.  Remarkable.

  It's also been beautiful to see people learn how to pray.  My cellmate had never said a public prayer before, until two months ago.  His prayers are so beautiful and so inspiring.  He's humble.  He's owned his life's mistakes up until now and he is determined to change and prays for it daily, prays for others, and my favorite part is when he prays asking God for blessings upon the hopeless and the homeless.  He's been there; he understands why we pray for the hopeless and the homeless and I'm grateful for him teaching me about that.  I've come to appreciate the trial of jail – I can relate to the Apostle Paul, "For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles," Ephesians 3:1  This jail has become less of a jail and more of a jail temple where I have been able to learn things that I would never have learned any other way.  Three Sundays ago, I came back from church humbled by the powerful spirit that was felt and looked up through a skylight where we have never seen the sun come through and I was surprised when my eyes welled with tears of gratitude that I'm able to be with these people and to learn and grow with them.  It is a privilege to know some of these people.

  I've also learned what hell is and can define it for you:  hell is being forced to be with people that you are not like and are antagonistic toward you and being forced to be with them FOREVER.

  I've also learned that heaven is the exact opposite.  Heaven is a place where you can be with people that are like you and that you love and enjoy to be with and they enjoy you, too; being free to go where you want to go and do what you want to do and to be able to do that FOREVER.  That is the definition of heaven.

  I've learned that there's a lot of mental illness in the jail that is in part a cause of the problems.  There is one tragic story of a clearly autistic young man, about 30 years old, who struggled in the jail.  He kept to himself.  Very quiet.  When he got his food, he would take it to the shower stall, sit on the floor, and pull the curtain for privacy so he could eat alone.  I tried to reach out to him with no success until I learned that he liked Jolly Rancher candies.  I offered him one, he looked at me and smiled, though he wouldn't take it, I presume because I was a "stranger".  He knew not to take it from a stranger.  When I told him he had a beautiful smile, he smiled even larger.  Though he never spoke to me, we at least connected.  Why that man, that clearly autistic man was in a jail is, in my mind, borderline criminal.

  My jail experience, though difficult, has actually been a blessing in many ways, on a personal level.  I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

  Barbara and I believe that we are on a divine "assignment" with regards to our Barbie and Ken vs Goliath IRS "adventure" and we trust Him and have given up everything.  Moses' words ring out "Thus saith the Lord God…let my people go that they may serve  me."  Exodus 10:3  Wouldn't it be wonderful if the shackles of slavery imposed by the IRS were broken?!  Barbara and I have suffered much and should be very discouraged by all that has happened, however, "We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed." 2 Corinthians 4:8-9  Because we believe "…,Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him."  1 Corinthians 2:9

  In Matthew 24 verse 30 the disciples asked Jesus, "…Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?"   As of this writing, two days ago there was the second eclipse that crossed our nation within almost a period of seven years.  Some believe it is as though God has "X'd" out our nation, that we've become wicked and yet, God promises to preserve and bless and protect those who love Him.  We should look forward to the Lord's Second Coming and align ourselves with being called "worthy to stand".

S. All Tom Fairbanks did was to spend much of his life gathering evidence on the Ritual Abuse of children in Utah. In early March 2024 he was arrested and placed in the Utah Weber County Jail. For what? The reasons given for his arrest were suspect and didn't appear to be due to criminal activity. His record was sparkling clean.
